Thoughts on Change at NYFW?: Josie Natori

Thursday, February 12, 2015

New York Fashion Week is back! I have waited so long for fashion week to rev back up again, and now that it is finally here I'd like to take the opportunity to talk about a designer that really nailed the ready-to-wear runway for the upcoming fall 2015.

(I wanted to give a quick shout out to Womens Wear Daily online. That is where I got the pictures from. Credit goes to them!)

Change is abundant in fashion this upcoming season. There is copious amounts of 70's inspired fashion trends making a comeback on the runway. Bell bottoms, suede, and funky billowy silhouettes are all the rage in shows from Derek Lam and Cade. I can't really say I'm intrigued by this attempt at bringing back the past. In casual/street fashion we saw a lot of 90's inspired outfits coming back, and I feel like street style did the revival of the past much better than runway. That's my personal opinion!

Now Josie Natori. I am not familiar with her work, however with some research I've gotten an idea of what her style is, which is very simplistic and sweet. With her fall 2015 collection there is a decent change in the theme/ target market for her line, compared to the 2015 spring collection.

(Spring 2015 above)

In the spring 2015 line she gravitated towards "the celebration of the islands", that being the Asian islands. With draping silhouettes and boxy Japanese inspired two piece sets, it is easy to identify her theme. Conversely, in the fall 2015 collection we see the luxurious aspect coming into play often with her looks.

As for fall 2015 I see a definite change, but still there are some pieces reminiscent of the Asian style silhouette. Natori's collection was very strong in the beginning of the show, however her line seemed to fall short towards the end. The repetitive patterns in the same styled silhouette just didn't do it for me. I did like how Natori incorporated the avocado green pieces into a mostly monochromatic black, cream, or white scheme. It was daring but also a safe play because it is a common move we see on runway.

Overall I think this collection stood out to me the most- at least for the days of NYFW that has already happened and been uploaded!

I'm sorry there was no outfit post today, things got hectic and I just didn't have time to ready myself. Stay well dressed and I will be back tomorrow with an outfit post!
